Most algae are not harmful, but sometimes
certain types can bloom in excessive amounts. These harmful algal blooms can negatively
impact human and pet health, aquatic ecosystems, and local economies. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae,
can appear in water bodies and form harmful algal blooms where toxins can occur. These toxins may cause skin irritation and
even illness in people and animals. EPA researchers collaborated with federal
partners to develop the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network mobile app, or CyAN App. The app gives users a cost-effective way to
track timely changes in cyanobacteria location and concentration in over 2,000 of the largest
lakes and reservoirs across the U.S. Drop a pin in a large lake of interest and
select view latest image to see the up-to-date cyanobacteria measurement. Track weekly measurements in your area and
explore additional functions like comparing multiple locations. Use the app to help inform decisions
regarding recreational and drinking water safety. Put the power of satellite observations to
assess cyanobacteria in the palm of your hand. Download the CyAN app today!
